Istanbul: Hagia Sophia

The “Holy Wisdom” – Hagia Sophia – is located in the European part of Istanbul. First a Byzantine church, then a mosque and now a museum, it is a model for church construction as well as for the design of mosques. Even today, the building is still a point of contention for various groups. For example, there are calls for it to be used as a mosque again. The state treaty, which was signed by Kemal Atatürk at the time and designates the building as a museum, is disputed.

Today it is a mosque again.
